Susan English

Color and all its subtleties and possibilities sits at the center of Susan English’s work. Sea glass blues, grays, and jewel toned pinks and greens spread in soft washes across her canvases. English works in tinted polymers to create luminous surfaces that change with the light and in relation to the viewer in space. Her abstract paintings stem from an intuitive relationship to color and space, and their composition and spiritual undertones evoke the work of famed color field painter Mark Rothko. She received an MFA from Hunter College in New York City and a BA from Hamilton College, Clinton, NY. She lives and works in Cold Spring, NY.

Uneven Balance, Now

ENDER MARTOS and PATRICK FAGERBERG

A collaborative exhibition of painting and sculpture

"Uneven Balance, Now" is the unexpected harmonious interaction of two distinct visual expressions in a specific moment in time — here and now. It encompasses an explosion of divine organization found in Fagerberg’s organic compositions and Martos’ orderly structure within premeditated and unforeseen symmetry. In this exhibition, the viewer’s presence is the key, the final ingredient bringing the artwork’s concepts to life.

Balance is found throughout this exhibition. It’s in the even distribution of the artwork in the space, the harmony between the artists’ work, and in the parallels of their cultural backgrounds. Natural elements — such as light, lenticular and reflective surfaces — interact with colorful monofilaments in Martos’ work, complementing the absence of color in Fagerberg’s pieces. The resulting high-contrast tension defies the inherent bi-dimensional qualities of the work.

The viewer is at the center of the experience of "Uneven Balance, Now". The viewer’s conscious presence connects the unexpected harmony in the artwork to the universal, but never replicable, context of the viewer’s perception in the here and now.

Join us Saturday for the last day of "Uneven Balance, Now". Artists Patrick Fagerberg and Ender Martos will be giving a talk at 12pm and we encourage you to stay after to enjoy the Art Car Parade, which will be lining up on Allen Parkway. Paid parking is available on Rosine Street and at Stages Theatre Garage (on the corner of Rosine and D'Amico Street).
